Everything Visible Is Empty
1975 << 色即是空 >> Directed by Toshio Matsumoto

There’s more to picture than meets the eye

In this journey into oriental metaphysical imagery. Starting with the Word, the film draws an explosion of visible forms, as if a sign of the shattering of shapes in the mundane world. But time is cyclical, of course, and what was once a multitude of sensible realities must eventually return to the Word and, finally, to sheer Color. (Sound of Eye).

"Take a look at the color-coded, meticulous storyboard graph from the director:

The Heart Sutra and Indian images set to a specific pattern.

One character for eight frames. 266 characters of The Heart Sutra repeat five times as the images transforms through the five senses and the visible (phenomenal) world.

Through meditation in search of the real cosmological principle, you can reach the world of śūnyatā (空 or void). for the color-coded numbers in the images above:

1. sutra

2. five senses

3. the phenomenal world

4. mandala (Buddhist visual schema of the enlightened mind)

5. aura
